I’m going to show you what it is and what you can do about it if you find yourself in this situation. Spot fixing is a defect and you should get it rectified.
What is tile spot fixing?
Tile spot fixing is when tiles have dabs of adhesive behind them rather than proper coverage. This picture is a great example. So this is what is looks like…
This is what it should look like.
And here is a snippet from a report recently stating this is not allowed.
Why do people spot fix?
The most common reason is builders try to cut cost and don’t make the walls in bathrooms very straight, it comes down the the builders and the walls. For a tiller to be able to lay tiles correctly the walls need to be very straight. When walls are not within acceptable tolerances for correct tiling then spot fixing is often used.
What can you do?
If you find you have spot fixed tiles you can contact TANZ Tile Association New Zealand and they will do a report for you. You can then contact a lawyer to serve that report on your builder, they are required to get these issues rectified as the primary contractor contractor on site.
